Chapter 1: Exercises

Types of Ideas
Theme

Gravity itself is very interesting, and the fact that it can be manipulated on camera is very intriguing. I want to create camera angles that help create the allusion, that little or no gravity is effecting the dancer. Turning the camera upside down, or sideways placing the dancer in places that seems like they are sitting on the ceiling, standing on the wall, etc. Along with movement that supports the idea. Tricking the brain into thinking that gravity played no effect in the creation of the video.

Work of Art
This painting creates a sense of thematic point of view. Creating movement patterns that include running, jumping, swooping, lounging, prancing, and any other type of action-based movement. It also stimulates a sense of mystery from the shadows and the way the staircase is set. Yet the architecture is very beautiful and inviting.
The project is not limited to stairs, but a large portion will consist of the use of stairs in some way. Along with shadows and architectural like movement. There will be three dancers in the piece creating the sense of friendship and tension.

Writing a treatment

2. If my foot steps follow yours, do we make a path?

This video dance is a video of five individual dancers sitting on a ledge. They are wearing regular street clothes of all different shades and colors. Some are in dresses others in pants and shirts. Creating a sense of normal life. One begins to move giving the feel that they are talking, or telling a story using their whole body. Their movement then triggers the person directly next to them and that person begins to dance as well creating a small duet. The others along with the camera just continue to watch this take place. Shortly after the first person "finishes" their story and sits, in a different spot, creating a chain reaction of movement to occur which then gets two others to join. Now having 3 dancers standing and moving, and two sitting on the ledge having their own "conversation". This movement pattern continues as they each take a turn sitting and creating a ripple effect till they are all standing.
The camera will then focus on their feet and become apart of the movement, no longer an outside viewer. Creating a sense of movement in and of itself. The dancers will then one by one finish "what they have to say" and one at a time sit back down on the ledge the way the began.

The ledge is outside in a courtyard with gravel, closed off from other areas, not a big open space creating a smaller more enclosed feel. The atmosphere of the work is different for each dancer. One may be frustrated while the other happy. Each dancer will take on a different emotion as they are the "listener" or "talker". This is a short film 2-3 minutes in length. The soundtrack is the sound of their feet as they scuff along the ground and their breath as they are moving. So it is a complete raw feeling. As if they just decided to do this and it wasn't planned. Very spontaneous.
